Hope and Chance

We are "Hope" and "Chance" - the two remaining kittens in the "Newborn Rescue Family". We once had a mother and three other siblings. We were born on March 19, 2013 in a recycling box outside someone's front door. Sadly, that person removed us and separated us from our mother when we were just newly born. (We still had our umbilical cords wrapped around us and our sacks of birthing fluid.)  We should have been left outside with our mother. Please note - the correct thing to do in this situation would have been to cover our recycling box and provide a warm, safe, dry shelter for our mother. She would have looked after us and had a safe warm place to keep us. Never remove kittens (especially newborns) without first making sure that their mother is not around....

Instead, our poor mother is still outside suffering. (She has a strong chance of getting a mastitis infection - from not nursing us.) Had she been left with us, she could have been spayed after she raised us,  and been brought inside and had the possibility of finding a permanent home. Instead, she still remains outside. If she survives, she will likely be pregnant again in a couple of months....

Due to this unfortunate circumstance, three of our siblings perished. They likely starved to death because they did not receive enough nutrition in time. We are hanging in, but it has been very difficult. Please cross your fingers for us.

We are a good example of how the community rallied to help us, and we are very grateful. We had vet techs and vet tech students come and help us. Friends of friends found us a surrogate mother. Kind donators provided us with Kitten Milk, bottles, syringes, bedding, food for our surrogate mother, litter & litter trays. Volunteers have been checking on us, dropping off supplies, and rushing us to the vet. Thank you to everyone for helping us.....

Our surrogate mother is absolutely wonderful. She is sweet and loving, and accepted us immediately. She licked us and groomed us, and got us started on nursing - as soon as we arrived. This was pretty amazing for her to do with an additional 5 kittens, considering she was already very busy with her own six kittens.... This meant that poor surrogate Mama was nursing 11 kittens!!! (The kittens were all supplemented and bottle fed as well, and Mama was given extra food - so she wasn't left to look after us all on her own....) Thanks also to our caregiver who bottle-fed us and helped us at all hours....

For a while, we were not doing too well and were not gaining weight. Three of our siblings died, so we spent some time with an experienced foster mom who bottle-fed us every couple of hours and took us the vet. We gained a little weight, but then got sick from the kitten formula. We went back to our surrogate mother. Our caregiver worked out a balance between supplemental feedings and nursing from our surrogate mom, which seems to be working and we are slowly gaining weight. (Keep your fingers crossed....)

We were just recently given names because our future was quite uncertain. Other rescue organizations were going to take us in and were going to name us, as were our potential fosters, but it did not work out that way.  So, here we are:

HOPE: I am the bigger, darker and stronger kitten.

CHANCE: I am the lighter, smaller one. I am underweight and under-developed. I opened up my eyes quite a bit later than Hope. I have an eye infection in one eye, and have been given some ointment by the vet. I first opened my eyes on March 31st. (I am also nicknamed "Tiny Tim".)
