thanks to the kind and generous winner of his naming auction, Karen.

Huckleberry

I am a handsome white and gray tabby, around 1 - 2 years old. I was first noticed prowling around a farm in the summer of 2012. I am a super sweet, friendly affectionate handsome male with unique markings, and for some unknown / un-humane reason, I was unwanted and dumped out in the country. Thankfully I managed to make it to the farm. Because I was previously a domestic cat with little survival skills out in the wild, I asked the owners of the farm for help and food. They thought at first that I was just lost, and looked for my owners. No one turned up. So they fed me and I lived outside all summer long – begging the family to take me in. I tried many tricks to get them to adopt me, and befriended their dog. The dog and I would nap outside together and hang out. I peered in through their patio doors all the time, but the owners of the farm didn’t want me either. I quickly learned that I was safe if I stayed close to the family and dogs, so I was always hanging around. The family did feed me, but did not want to adopt me nor want me inside. However, because I am so charming and irresistible, they slowly started warming up to me and giving me affection.

However, there was a big problem. They were heading out of town for a few months during the winter, and became worried about what would happen to me in the cold, with no food….. Their solution was to fatten me up! I was a scrawny little cat when I arrived, but in preparing me to survive outside for the long winter, they fattened me up like a bear. I was fed all day long and became a rather rotund farm cat! I actually looked like a little bear preparing for hibernation….

Thankfully my rescuer arrived on the scene in the knick of time. She had heard of my existence at the farm from a mutual acquaintance, and knew that it was not a sustainable solution to leave me abandoned outside once again – particularly during a cold winter, and with no skills to feed myself. A friend of hers had previously fostered and adopted a cat from Hungry and Homeless Cat Rescue, so she contacted the Rescue. Not only that, she campaigned all her friends and colleagues to foster me, so that I could have a place to be brought inside to. And she was successful. So, on a planned day, “Operation Farm Boy Kitty Rescue” rescue unfolded. The owners of the farm brought me inside for the first time. I was very happy with all the extra attention, and quite oblivious how my life was going to change. My rescuer then arrived and put me in a carrier, and I was rushed to a vet appointment to be checked over and treated. I didn’t even have a name yet, so the name on my vet files was “Farm Boy Rescue”. My rescuer then brought me to my new foster home where I adjusted very well.

I am an adorable, irresistible, cuddly boy with the cutest little grin on my face.  After a few vet appointments, I was all de-wormed, de-fleaed, vaccinated and neutered. The great news was that I was healthy and tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia! My fosters nicknamed me “Charlie”.

I get along with everyone, and love affection and companionship. I would do well in a home with other animals, as I enjoy the companionship of dogs and cats. I very much enjoy playing with my foster’s male cat. I am a sweet, playful happy boy who is very grateful for the assistance I received. And as a result, I purr a big affectionate hello to everyone I meet. I am especially forever grateful to my rescuer - who cared enough to save my life. I would have never survived the winter outside without her intervention…..

By the way, you will be glad to know that I no longer look like a fat little bear! I was put on a diet and fed good food. In addition to all the exercise I get from playing and horsing around with my feline foster brother, I have gotten my figure back! Would you like to welcome me into your home so that I can brighten it up for you? Everyone who has met me, including all the vet staff, has said that anyone who adopts me would be lucky to have me….!

* NOTE: Huckleberry was adopted and returned to us after he got sick. He is now in a new foster home and doing well. April, 2013.
